On the whole, love is the one word that is often abused by many. A faction of people holds the allusion that love is a “feeling” whereas others consider it as an idea. Whilst these remain untrue a worse form is portrayed by those who do have an understating of love yet do not practice it. How do we categorize such persons? Hmm!
In today’s devotion, a great demand is placed on the love you have found in Christ so that you can practice it. Often, when love is discussed we are quick to think of how others have not shown us love or have to. In sharing how to know what love is, Apostle John mentions how we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers with emphasis on how Christ laid down His life for us. You will agree with me that seeking to be loved is not the way rather deciding to love (lay down your life) is.
Laying down one’s life here means being ready to love and serve one another wholeheartedly. For what is worth, the benefit of love lies in what it can do for others. “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28), we must understand love in regards to laying down our lives.
This morning as you begin your day, think about how you can lay down your life in service to God, in helping your colleagues, in praying for family, friends and leaders. Then as promised your labor of love will not be in vain.
Dear God, I am grateful for the love you bestowed upon me. I pray that my understanding of love should be reflected in my readiness to serve others. In Jesus’ Name.
